From the Archive: Julian Barnes

Writers Read looks back at hosting Julian Barnes in 2005. Those who were wise enough to find an early seat crowded themselves into the Samuel Bronfman Building to listen as Julian Barnes read excerpts of his then-newly released novel, Arthur & George. Barnes spoke of Spanish-speaking, Bible-narrating parrots, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and creative process for Author & George. The novel was shortlisted that year for the Booker Prize,Barnes’ third shortlisting. Barnes would later win the Booker Prize in 2011 for his novel, The Sense of an Ending.

In a few weeks from now, Barnes will accept the Siegfried Lenz Prize for outstanding literary contributions. He is the second recipient of the biennial prize, awarded to Amos Oz in 2014. Barnes’ acceptance ceremony will take place November 10th, 2016, in Hamburg, Germany.
